The General Dental Council (GDC) has successfully prosecuted another member of the public for practising dentistry without the appropriate qualifications or registrations. Under Section 38 (1) and (2) of the Dentists Act, it is illegal for all except dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and clinical dental technicians to carry out tooth whitening.
On June 17 2015 Sarah Lewis pleaded guilty at Bromley Magistrates’ Court to unlawfully practising dentistry by offering a tooth whitening service at The Beauty Centre, Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington, in Kent, on March 3 2015.
Ms Lewis, who has never been registered with the GDC, was ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge, compensation of £330 and full costs to the GDC of £816.92 as well as receiving a 12 month conditional discharge.
The case against Ms Lewis followed a complaint from a patient who suffered harm as a result of the treatment she provided, but the GDC provided no further details in this regard.
