Philips has added to its trophy cabinet with yet another prestigious award for Sonicare AirFloss. The hand-held electronic interdental cleaning device has been announced as one of the winners of the prestigious 2014 Pride Institute ‘Best of Class’ Technology Award in Dentistry. The Pride Institute states that the awards “recognise the exemplary products and technologies that are rapidly redesigning approaches to patient care and practice management.”
After a year of individual analysis and review, a panel of distinguished technology experts who make up the Best of Class advisory board come together to share their findings and vote on the products and technologies they feel best embody these criteria. The rigorous voting process is entirely unbiased, and, to ensure impartiality, advisory board members are required to divulge any paid relationships with manufacturers. They are also ineligible to vote in any category in which they have a consulting relationship with a company. If the board members cannot identify a clear leader in a particular area, no award is given for that category.
The design brief for Sonicare AirFloss was to make it easy for patients who do not floss to do so effectively, yet gently, remove plaque in hard-to-reach interproximal areas, reducing gingivitis and improving gum health1. Findings from a recent piece of research conducted amongst 340 Dental Hygienists2 corroborate its ability to do just that. During an in-practice study, patients with mild to moderate gingivitis were instructed to use Philips Sonicare AirFloss with mouthwash instead of water in the reservoir for a period of 60 days.
The Dental Hygienists noted improved gum health in 95 per cent of their patients, including a 73 per cent reduction in gingival bleeding sites, and 88 per cent reported a significant improvement in their patients’ interproximal health. Overall, 96 per cent showed improved oral hygiene when they returned to the practice at the end of the study. Impressively, the Dental Hygienists involved in the study believed that 87 per cent of their patients would continue to use AirFloss regularly and this long term compliance will undoubtedly yield improved longer term outcomes.
Results such as these have attributed to AirFloss’ success and over two million devices have been sold worldwide. It also achieved accreditation from the British Dental Health Foundation in the UK after review by its autonomous advisory board.
According to the President of Best of Class Award in Dentistry, Dr. Lou Shuman: “This is the list every practitioner should be waiting for every year. It has become a go-to list for the dental community, who can be completely confident they are purchasing the current state-of-the-art products. The goal is to find products and/or technologies that are considered clear differentiators; products that are truly class defining, above and beyond everything else in their respective categories.”
The award winning products will be announced at the ADA Annual Meeting in October 2014 which is being held in St Antonio in the USA. For more information about Sonicare AirFloss please visit www.sonicare.co.uk or telephone 0800 0567 222.
